How to Plan Cocktail Hour Music

Background music that people still remember.

BookLive set list for a wedding ceremony timeline that loads into musicians' music-stand app
A set list for each part of the event, including cocktail hour.

The short answer

Cocktail hour usually runs about an hour, so plan roughly 15 to 20 songs with a little extra in case it runs long. Keep the energy upbeat but the volume conversational, mix familiar songs guests will recognize with instrumental arrangements, include a few of the couple's favorites, and agree with the coordinator on when to wrap up for the reception.

It's one part of the full event timeline and set list.

Building the set

  • Open with something bright and familiar as guests arrive.
  • Mix eras and styles so every age group hears something they know.
  • Include two or three of the couple's favorites.
  • Have extra songs ready in case dinner is delayed.

Volume and placement

Guests want to talk. Set up near the action but not in the middle of the conversation, and keep the volume low enough that people don't have to raise their voices.

The handoff

Confirm with the coordinator how you'll know cocktail hour is ending, and whether you're moving to another space or handing off to a band or DJ. A smooth transition is part of a good performance.
